IF you already have 4x1 wont you need 4x2 to make 8 gig or does the Mac have more than 4 memory slots?
Either way i'd be tepted to get 4x2gig anyway so that you have room to upgrade again if you want to. You should be able to sell the 4x1gig that you have now. Crucial is a good quality brand. edit - just noticed the Mac Pro has 8 slots but i'd still prefer to leave some free ones for later. |

Well you can use 2 x 1 gb and 1 x 2 gb on a PC but that's not really the question.
I'm not even sure how specific the DDR2 PC6400 is to Macs either? Can you not just use any 240 pin DDR2 PC6400 RAM in a Mac now that they're Intel machines? There are plenty of other places to get it from :- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-190-CS |

Should be fine man i can see no reason why FB dimms would kick off because different slots are populated with different size sticks. just make sure you keep the channels even. Ie if the plan is for 2x2gb + 2x1gb then each channel should have 1 x 2gb stick + 1 x1gb stick

All that info, with simple to read instructions/diagrams will be inclosed in your manual that you got with your mac pro.
It's best that you fully study that before you install your RAM. If you've lost it they've got a pretty hefty PDF database on the support site. If I remember rightly, although I may be wrong you will have to install your new 2GB modules into slots A1 and B1. Then your 1GB modules can go into the following channels. I think you have to install it with the largest modules first. I have got some DDR2 FB RAM at home that's brand new if you're interested. It's Elixir, which has always been a big one for us here. However, i can't remember if they are 1GB or 2GB modules. Will let you know when i get home. |
