I don't know if it'll help at all, but with an old(ish) Packard Bell desktop i had, i was after installing XP on it. I was having trouble because it wasn't just booting from the disk on start up, instead i had to hold in F12 (I think.. it was circled in red on the keyboard) and it then gave the option to be able to boot. A long shot as i say, but might be the norm with PB.

Why isn't it formating with the XP disc? You say it got to 34%?

There might still be a Vista recovery hidden partition on the C drive.

This WMCE machine I am on has one and you simply cannot get into that drive to format it (can't copy it either, grr!).

So there is a chance you could at least get back to square one.

Can you run to Setup and change boot orders?

Dave (the other thing is in progress. )

OK an update, this is after your email ecc83 too, i just managed to get the OEM disk i bought to start formatting the disk which it wouldn't before, im praying now that i bought a genuine MS product, it looks good and i bought it from a reputable on line retailer but i just hope the serial is legit as after the first try it refused it but that may be because i used a different disk which was a retail version

OMG i finally did it last night, i had to copy the contents on the XP DVD into a folder, download the intel chipset drivers from the appropriate site, extract the the appropriate files from the exe file and slipstream them into the copied XP content via a freeware called nlight!!! worked a dream, all that is left now is to find and install the drivers

Thankyou to every one who helped me along my journey and contacted me, i think im now in the clear

PBs have to be tatooed usually to allow you to do a fresh install, they will only restore from their own recovery media which the user normally has to create when they buy the machine. It is possible to get xp on there using their own "Roll back" CD (which effectively formats the drive and tattooes it for the xp install). Ive managed to get a couple of older ones to work by installing XP on to the HDD from another machine but that was before they started with the heavy duty tattooing. Some of the cheaper models such as the v200 dont need anything at all but you need a floppy to hand as you need to load in the sata drivers before xp starts installing as theyre not in the XP driver base. But i would personally try and get the roll back software
