Default Ghost in the machine?

Here's an interesting one.

I turn on my PC and many times I have to restart it as no sound comes from the DAW or even from iTunes. I have updated the firmware i.e Focusrite Saffire but it hasn't improved anything.

Sometimes when I turn the system on, everything is okay. The MIDI indicators show that it is receiving information from the keyboard controller and I hear sound through the headphones.

But then, I turn on my KRK RP6s and the RP10 subwoofer and "bang" I no longer have sound. Not only that but if I turn on the monitors before starting the system, check that there is sound, and then turn off the monitors the sound disappears also.

It's f****** annoying as sometimes I might have to restart the system three times!

Ghost in the machine?

Anyone else had a problem like this?
Is it better to have monitors turned on before starting the system or could they become damaged as a result?

BTW the OS is VISTA - does that say it all?

Monitors only project the sound.

Has to be the soundcard? Very odd behaviour.

I use different cards for the DAW and internal sounds. Saves on conflict. Others just use one. That works for them and this works for me.

Vista tells me that I have upto date drivers for Saffire but something isn't right.

Will try saxman's suggestion as said above!

shouldn't you check the actual driver installed and cross reference it with the latest driver on saffires site? i wouldn't trust vista to know it's own driver version let alone a 3rd parties?

I think your best bet is to contact focusrite as this could be an issue with vista.

Screwing around in the registry isn't as scary as you think. Just be sure to pay attention.

My advice - back up your system, **** around in the registry and if it all goes Pete Tong then you can restore and you've also learned something about your PC.

If it works, then it works and you've also learned something about your pc.

If it fails, email focusrite.

I switch my system on first, then monitors, but I run a Mac, but hell, i could still be doing it wrong, though the sound it makes when i switch the system off and forget to turn the monitors off confirms that I probably am getting it right by switching it off first.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but have you made sure your daw apps output is set to main outs as opposed to phones? If you've got sound in your phones then it could be that.

Also you could try control panel-sounds and audio devices-audio tab and make sure your main outs are selected in the "sound playback" bit. (that is XP path but I don't know vistas but should be similar).
