Ok. Following my woes of last night, I took the plunge and formatted my mac.
I am however, a bit concerned because it doesn't appear to have given me back all of the hard drive space. Using disk utility, I can see that: The hitatchi master drive is 111.8 GB. Which is correct when expressed as 120,034,123,776 bytes. Now what gets me is when I go to look at the Macintosh HD, things get a bit wierd. It has a capacity of 97.9 GB, or 105,092,481,024 bytes. That means 13.9GB has been somehow lost. It then tells me that of the above capacity, 84.6GB (or 90,877,534,208) is available, meaning anther 13.2 GB has gone awol. I'm guessing this is space taken by OSX, but I'm miffed by the 13.9GB from above.. I'm now using an option to erase free space, to see if that claims it back. If that doesn't work, installing an OSX that shouldn't be any bigger then 15GB, takes up closer to 27.2 GB (Hitatchi total capacity - Mac HD available). During install, I did tell it to wipe over the current data. And I missed certain things off (like apples ridiculous 3GB printer support), meaning the install was closer to 10GB then the full works 15GB. ![]() I've attached some screen shots to help you see what I meant. |

Ok - That seems odd. I have just on my machine.
My total capacity for the OSX drive is 465.8 Gb, when I click on "Main Disc" (my name for the OSX drive) it shows 465.4 Gb, just 0.4 Gb difference. Do you have an old BootCamp partition left over? It's all I can think of. ______________________________

Well there is something on that disc that hasn't been wiped.
I think that one way or another, you are going to have to start installation again if you want to get to the bottom of this. You didn't do an archive and install? (not that I'm sure that will make any difference). If it was me, I'd install OSX on a temporary external drive. Boot from it, then do a repartition of your internal disc to make sure it is really reinitialised. ______________________________
