Default Playing Live with Laptop!

Hi Guys,

I'm helping a friend out with the "live" version of his project "The Papertiger Sound". He is going to be singing and playing guitar while I manipulate various loops with Ableton on my Laptop.
I was wondering what any of you gigging laptop musicians use in the way of a stand? during rehearsals I just sit on the floor. Are there specific laptop stands on the market that allow you to play standing up? I like to use a mouse as well if possible.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark Morb,

Hi Mark

I canít help you directly, but I can give you an example.

I recently went to the Howard Jones Anniversary concert at the O2 arena. I wonít go on about how marvellous it was, but it was.

Anyway, for the latter part of the set, the more electronic part, a musician wheeled on a ďrigĒ to help control the performance. It was square, about 5 feet high with a black MacBook sitting on top running Ableton Live. In front of the MacBook was a small MIDI keyboard and a MIDI control surface with a few knobs/faders.

So during each song, this guy would use the small MIDI keyboard to activate Ableton and then control filters / effects using the MIDI control surface. He was on his feet the whole time. All this while Howard played and sung live. It worked very, very well.

So, I hope itís helpful to have at least heard how someone else does it.

There's laptop stand at DV's Here, but it doesn't have any surface for mouse I think. I've been looking solution to same problem although I always have 2 61-key synths with me. Maybe you could build surface on top of X-frame keyboard stand.

Hi again

Sorry for the delay - but Iíve managed to find a photo of the stand used at the concert I was talking about. Might give you some ideas?

PS Iíve put the image on its side because the forum rules have a 280 pixel maximum height.

I actually use that uberstand in my set up, cant complain, really aimed for a Dj though as its more a stand than workstation if that makes sense, it aids visual display rather than workflow
