Hey
I'm checking out (relatively) budget audio interfaces for 64-bit windows XP, and have limited success, but have found a nice portable and good quality interface known as the Focusrite Saffire: Here I haven't got it yet, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with the interface, or has found any others in a similar price range that offer 64 bit support? if you were using Vista 64 you might have more luck... my Edirol FA-101 has support for every OS (WinVista 32 and 64, Mac OS 9 and 10, and WinXP 32bit) except that one and linux!!
can I ask why you have gone for that particular OS? |

Yep. Good question. Why go 64 bit?
As far as I know, you will have a hard time finding plugins, drivers and software. 64 bit doesn't really give you any extra edge over 32 other than for very esoteric purposes. Your computer is able to also run in 32 bit mode. I recommend you try out both and measure whether 64 gives you any benefit over 32. I'm betting you don't get any benefit and your life will be a lot easier in 32 bit mode. |

Been there done that and my personal advice is get shot of xp 64 now. it will work and does support a lot of interfaces using the 32 bit drivers provided but trust me 64 bit OSs just dont work atm. I have had the same system using both 32 bit and 64bit XP and 32 bit is still the way forward. I was even told that my problems were due to using Cubase SX2 so upgraded to 4 and that made no difference.
My advice steer clear of vista and go back to XP home or Pro but use SP2, thats the best results ive had for a stable system. And dont use an Edirol FA101 on a pc, not worth the hassle, use a UA101 instead if you want the same set up. |

I'm still not going to be sold on 64-bit Vista being useless... I've been running it for about a year now and it seems to have been sorted... no crashes for about 6 months and everything I have works perfectly... I'll stop there and possibly start a new thread before I get carried away; I can see this debate raging on forever!! Quote:

I've gone 64 bit XP Pro. My reason for doing so was to able to use a PC with 8Gb RAM. 32bit operating systems can not use more than 4Gb RAM.
My needs are quite simple compared to many. I use Jammer Professional for composing and midi sequencing. Jammer is a midi application, no VST support. I use Midi Yoke from MIDIOX to output from Jammer to various virtual instruments. My E-MU 1212m soundcard works in 64bit XP as do all my music apps I was using before I went 64bit. I have to use the same PC for my daily work and found one web management application that would not run under XP64. I got round that problem by installing the free Virtual PC from Microsoft. In Virtual PC I run XP 32 bit and my web app. |

Hi JAYDMF,
There are some apparently very well informed people on studio-central who are coming to terms with Blista and say Win 7 is a crock of ***t? I understand XP will be "activatable" untill 2014 by which time I shall be completely GA-GA (i.e. not so far off now!). To the 64 bit OP. Do read SOS Home There are various articles by Martin Walker on this subject. Dave. |

As far as i was aware the full build of windows 7 is no where near complete and due to intels plans for the x58 chipset and the new range of processors under the bloomfield and lynnsdale core names (which support octocores) i heard windows 7 was going to be held back for a while. could be wrong tho, all i know is i wont be switching from XP SP2 until microsoft pull their finger out of their ass and make a decent OS again
