Look forward to hearing the sounds difference. Any chance you can post the result?

Which Mex bass did you get? Standard or Classic series?

I'll be interested to hear an A/B, as Trev asked, if you can post something that would be awesome. As I've said, I got a 50's reissue classic which is MIM but I think it sounds really good - if it could be better I'd be happy to entertain such possibilities.

The really big plus with the bass I got (and the reason I chose it) is the awesome neck. Chunky, felt better than even the American standard stuff...

Look forward to the test results!

Funny, I hate precision necks! I have a vintage USA (neck only) hanging on my wall. The P bass body is now wearing a 74 jazz neck

My bass is just the standard MIM not the classic, at £349.00 for the sun burst a little more expensive than a plain colour.

It may be some weeks before I change the pick up, I'm a novice bass player at the moment, so don't expect Louis Johnson. I will post the results of this experiment here although I'm not sure how to post sound files. maybe someone could advise on that.

Generally the advice is not to use active pick-ups for recording.

Most bassists balk at the very suggestion seeing as they've more then likely paid very good money for their circuitry but it's not conducive to good recordings. You can still use the bass guitar, just best to avoid the active mode.

Absolutely right You put it more concisely (an excellent trait by the way) but exactly what I was (albeit clumsily) trying to say here:

Quote:
This is a slight aside, but if you are wanting the bass for is recording, I'd say get the precision. There isn't a better bass for it. It's always harder getting an awesome bass sound out of an active onto tape. There almost always seems to be just something missing with an active. (I'm a bass player too and have a couple of high end actives at my disposal but 9 times out of 10 a precision or jazz will get the job). You can always upgrade precision pickups... [snip]

I bought an Ibanez SR1000EFM http://www.ibanez.co.jp/world/country/frame_uk.html a couple of months ago. I was unaware of the active v passive bass debate that you have raised Trev.

The Ibanez is active and very nice but I haven't recorded with it yet. Now I am a bit worried about the possibility.

Is the difference a question of tone quality?
Would I be better buying a bass amp and micing this? Would this solve and lacking that you were talking about Trev?
Or should I just record and see if I like what I hear before panicking?

Work with the tools you have. Next tme you to buy a new bass you'll be better informed! Unless you've got a great room micing a bass will end up in tears. Just go DI and be done with it.
