Default Best 5 String Bass?

What is the best 5 string Bass in your opinion?
...And what 5 string bass do you own?

I own a Musicman Stingray 5, Natural Ash body, Maple neck (1995). I honestly think it is the best 5 string bass money can buy.
The Stingray 5 isn't just a bass with an extra string, it's a full on superbly voiced 5 string bass (If you know what i mean).

Lastly, it is great looking in every way, you can't beat that classic design.

So.. What do you think?

Best? That's very subjective in music circles. If you like the musicman growl then your musicman may well be the best 5 string musicman. Others may prefer a 5 string warwick/alembic/W.H.Y. So if you like it best, then it's the best for you so be happy and dont worry about what others think.

Trevor,

Yes, Best… I wouldn’t settle for anything less.

Correct! Yes I do think my Musicman is best for me and I am indeed extremely happy, but seeing as we’re in a forum I thought I would share that with you and find out other people’s opinions, that’s what you do after all isn’t it?

“Growl”? … If I wanted growl I would have bought a Rottweiler, I bought my Stingray for its superb high end.

“Others may prefer a 5 string Warwick”? … Warwick has the widest selection of woods, pick-up configurations and build qualities I have ever seen from a bass manufacturer. Be more precise please.

So, what’s best 5 string bass in your opinion?

i think what Trev was implying that your question is very subjective...
there for there is no "best" 5 string.

Why do you think your Musicman Stingray 5 is best?
May be, "what are the greatest 5 strings" would of been more apt..
oh well my 2 pence

I don't know about the best 5 string bass, but I don't think you could do much better within the budget of the £207 I spent on my Toby Custom Pro thru neck 5 string (including a padded case!)

Spot on. What's best for one song wont be best for another. What's best for one song to one persons ears wont be best for another. The highs of the musicman may be the best thing about it for you, the midrange growl is for me.

The question makes no sense that's why I answered it the way I did. It's like "what's the best flavour of chocolate"?

No, that's never what I do. Go readsome of my posts. If anything I pretty much always tell people that sound is a very subjective medium. What sounds good to you is good (to you). MMMV (My Mileage May Vary).

If you mean what is my own preference, I don't have one. I'm not big on 5 strings. I couldn't even say which of my 4 string basses are 'best' because, in their own way, they are all awesome. There is no best. There like microphones. Each is subjectively better in different circumstances. Some days my custom P bass, other my J, some days my warwick infinity (usually only for live work actually), some days my alembic. Are you getting it yet?

Yes, you are right. There are certain basses you would use in different situations, for recording I would use a P-Bass, for my pop gigs my Jazz and everything else and everything that needs the low B I choose my Musicman.

What I’m saying is- for the people that can’t afford to have a museum of basses and could have only one 5 string bass what would it be? (Wouldn’t that be ‘The Best’ bass they could get?).

For example: I personally think my Musicman is BEST overall and I wouldn’t be afraid to bring it to any gig knowing it’s going to always perform as I want it to.

Don't get me started on the bargains......

I've got a 2007 warwick streamer $$ 5 string, sells new for £2k and I got it for £500.00 - yeah it's second hand but it's mint!

Coil tapped into the MM setting it's meaty growl is unbeatable!
