Question Noisy Pickups

Hi -

I have an American made 'Fender Jazz Bass' which i love but:

Its 'passive' pick-ups are so noisy!
As soon as I plug the jack into my Peavey amp it just starts up a hum, and it isn't the amp; it happens on all amps i use with the rig.

My teacher said that I should get the pick-ups 'earthed' - what is this exactly??
Any other suggestions out there??

I notice that he has one jazz bass (he has quite a few) which has 'active' pickups = not a sound!...

Jack inputs:
I know that these can also cause problems.
What are the good makes/models out there?

Thanks

Hi Bluejon

Your teacher could be correct, or it could just be a case of a loose wire in the the jack input. Either way it's pretty simple to fix:

Earthing will take out any wayward electric current that is in the bass thus will remove any electrical or microphonic hum from your pickups, it's pretty in-expensive to get done, probably around the 10-15 area.

Or in the case of needing a new jack input all you need is to find the part suitable for your bass (a good Google search could find this for you) take a few screws out and solder some wires onto the new jack.

Can I ask; do you get any kind of electrical hum or interference when you touch the strings or the bridge?

Best regards

Default Noisy pickups/hum

Interesting question:

I find that the hum is there when the strings are left alone - but when i touch the strings/mute them by putting my hand on them the hum stops.

Take my hand off and the hum returns.

Looks like you might have a wire / grounding issue, Have you tried using different cables?

I had this problem with my old Bass which was also passive, hummed like hell when the strings weren't touched, I tried everything. It was pretty old so i just sold it. Bought an active bass and no hum atall. I don't think that alone was the solution mind you, you can probably fix it.
