... the revenge
.Seeing as trev is still posting about his room treatment i thought id make a new thread so that it doesnt get too confusing. Im treating my room atm using completely different methods to trev due to the fact i live at home and i want to be able to move this stuff out to another place whenever i need to so for me building it into the room wasnt an option. instead i decided to go for creating boards which could be hung anywhere or alternatively be used as small gobos when i can do what trev is doing. To do this all ive used is 18mm MDF ( a fair bit of it too) 3 x 1200x 1200 sheets (thanks to me dads mate for getting hold of that for me ), 4 x 1200 x 600 sheets, 1 pack of Wickes 50mm insulation, loads of foam taken from laptop packaging (25 pieces for the boards), 4 x universal acoustics jupiter bass traps (600s), universal acoustics cosmic fluid and space mist, some mdf primer, dulux black satin paint and a ton of eye bolts from screwfix coupled with some heft zinc hooks from B&Q. So first of i just made up some basic boxes (first image). these are 1000 x 1000 (mm) with sides being 75 (mm, roughly) tall, glued and screwed. Next thing was to cuz some holes for at least some transmission (i know technically it would have been better to make frames but i felt this way was sturdier) so with the aid of a 5" hole saw and a fooking scary , way to overpowered drill of me dads i cut 9 holes in the centre of the boxes (second pic), boxes were then filled, plained and sanded to smooth the edges on the sides and freshly drilled holes. You can also see in the second pic that theres blocks in the corners and centre, these are there to help support the eye bolts and are just screwed in. The boxes were then primed with MDF primer and painted black with some dulux satin paint that was lying around from when the bathroom was done not so long back. Once dry i then used the 50mm insulation to line the boxes. once i had the shape of the insulation i then cleaned the inside of the boxes out and put the Space mist to work (couldnt get a decent enough picture of this being done as my rents have stolen my camera for holiday and these photos are all off my phone). I made up some boxes for the bass traps too using the same sort of method. 2 sheets cut 1200 x 280 (one obviously wider than the other) with tops and bottoms then painted and finally the jupiters glued in using cosmic fluid. Thats as far as i am so far. waiting for the space mist to go off right now so i can stick the foam on top. Ok so more space mist and some cutting of foam later and the first board is up on the wall. not gonna be the best pic or the best board as i didnt realise how tacky the space mist was and how easily it gets everywhere, secondly i need a better knife for cutting the foam. still its up and when the others are finished it should be pretty good in there |

Cool...it would be better to not have a back on them though, holes notwithstanding...

Actually stole the idea from college where they had the same sort of thing hanging from the walls but you could turn them either way to either add a bit of life back into the room or kill the room some more with the foam side. although theres were a lot flashier than these ![]() |

Ok so its been a while and ive managed to get a lot more done. still waiting for a few pieces to arrive but its sounding and looking much better.
Pictures blurry as for some reason this camera has gone mental on auto focus. needs replacing with something decent |

In the mix position its sounding well nice. havent done any prolonged testing yet as the house is still being worked on. gotta take all the synths backout because the roof tiles are being replaced and new panels in the skylights. but its all wired there. if i stand right at the back i can still notice a bit of slap going on but i think if i place a couple of bits right up in the pitch it should break that up.
quite a nice comparison tho as in the mix pos. its well tight and focused and outside you can here if everything is as good as first thought, other advantage is i have curtains hanging at the back now so i can stand down stairs and reference the bass too. |
