Default Materials

This is a question for Trev really but i thought if i name it as just materials any body can ask about acoustic materials.

Right on to the point.

Im building boards for room treatment that im gonna hang in several places, ive got the wood and ive got a shed load of foam (not the proper kind really but it was free and im on a budget until i move into the garage) all i need to know is what insulation to use.

ive got 100cm x100cm, 18mm MDF board and im going to bore holes in them using a 4" cutter , on the board im then planning on sticking 50mm insulation and then the foam on top of that which should work well enough for what i want.

but what insulation do i use?

i was looking at this:
Clicky

Is that about right or should i go for the less dense stuff like this :

Go for the less dense stuff under the 2nd link. I'm currently using the green bagged wickes stuff in my makeshift control room thread ( Treating a domestic sized room )

To be honest though the stuff from Travis Perkins (they call it rocksilk) is the same stuff but cheaper. You want rs60 for suprerchunk style traps and rs46 for wall panels and clouds.

Heh heh. unfortunatly i cant make superchunks although i would love to as the room has to be left relatively untouched. the board are only gonna put a few holes in the walls for where as superchunks my rents dont particularly like the idea of. Instead im planning on knocking up some removable traps using Universal acoustics jupiter traps. 2 in each corer glued in to a cabinet and fixed to the wall just using angle brackets. that way when i move to the garage i can use them in the rears or fronts temporarily

Look again at my superchunks. They are actually freestanding. It's the cloud that is screwed to down. If you want to take a closer look I'll be in the studio pretty much all day sunday.

Are you planning on putting it right on the MDF? I'd recommend leaving the back of the panel open if at all possible...

Well its gonna be kinda open. got a 5" hole saw and im gonna cut about 9 holes in the back panel of each board, cant cut too much out as im hanging it from the rear but im trying to let as much through as possible.

It would be better to leave it completely open, like cut a 2" frame for the panel or something, but a bunch of 5" holes is a lot better than a solid back.
