Default Ok so i got Ableton live!!!! Im Disgusted with it!!!

well i have to say im disgusted at how easy it is to dj with it and the possibilities it has to offer, it still hasn't fully sunk in the potential it has too offer because quite frankly i don't want to start thinking about it as so not to get too excited!!! this software shouldn't be allowed to be sold ok now that i have got that off my chest i have a newb question?

When i warp a track and click the save marker next to the wave form does it save it destructively effecting the original source?

no its non destructive paul, when you save your warp details it saves to a .asd file in the same directory and with the same name as the source file, just remember that if you move the source file or rename it you need to do the same to the asd file aswell

Theres an interesting legal aspect to those ASD files - in theory your not supposed to ruthlessly hack peoples music around when DJing beyond what you can do in real time - ie no chopping it up before hand, and resampling apparantly is bad - even though we all do it of course

When you chop stuff in live however, unless you use the consolidate function, it doesnt actually impact the original audio track at all or make a copy of any part of it, instead it just saves instructions about what you want it to do.

Technically this means its performing all the chopping and mangling live in real on your behalf - so your not in violation of the generally ignored fine print in performance rights and digital media rights agreements etc that were all supposed to have these days

yes with a proper control surface it really is a gem for making livesets. I havnt looked back from I started using it, I still use cdj's when playing in clubs but the whole A to B mixing doesnt really cut it for me anymore, wheres the fun in that lol

Its brilliant isnt it? I used to dj with vinyl until I saw Sasha rave on about Live, and I decided to give it a whirl. Once I got to grips with it (which doesnt take long) I felt like I had been using a horse & cart & Id just jumped into a Porsche! If you go on Abletons forums, theres a good thread which is titled something along the lines of 'new things youve just discovered in Live' & I use it all the time, because theres always something new which you didnt know it could do, like the other day I discovered you could reverse the clips by using pressing the rev button in the clip editor...Ive been using it for 3 years & I just discovered it! Doh! Id been using sampler to do it previously...anyways enough blabbering on...its the dogs nuts.

Default More disgusted protestations in regards to this Ableton thing.

I must say that I cannot agree more. Ableton has disgusted me more than any soft or hardware I have yet come across.

Unless you are a total meathead and enjoy carrying several boxes of very heavy records to a gig; crave looking an absolute dick when your set slips out of time and spend more effort than is necessary cuing up your vinyl, then this particular disgust is not for you. I however, revel in it.

I've not used it for any public dj'ing as yet but was blown away when I loaded a piece of Japanese flute music (which I very much doubt was recorded with a metronome or click track) into a live set that had some glitchy loops i'd written in it, in order to practise using the warping tool.

To my disgust, the whole thing played from beginning to end locked so tightly that I didn't have to do a thing.

Truth be told, the track was cheesey as fu*k. Like making "Mull of Kintyre" into a drum and bass tune but worse. However the fact remains the same. Ableton is an incredible tool.

It can handle most of what is thrown at it without waking up out of its slumber, stir it into life and it does what its name suggests....It lives!

Live for live, it's what i've been waiting for all my life.

Default They don't make them like they used to.

I remember the old days when I spent over £2k on an Emu E3XP sampler that didn't have analogue inputs (they were optional and at the price of around £500).

There was no onboard fx either, so you had to bounce things to and fro in order to make things interesting. That is if you could afford an A/D D/A converter.

This could take all evening and still you may not get things to sit together properly.

Oh what fun we had then!

And now, like you Sureno, I feel cheap. Slovenly even. Because I don't have to work my butt off to pay for expensive hardware, or indeed put ridiculous hours or a gargantuan effort in anymore.

Worse still, things sound better now. With the advent of cheap 24 bit sound cards 64X oversampling and advanced computer capabilities that mean I don't have to run everything down a 3 metre cable several times in order to put an effect on a single drum hit.

And then there's sample assignment, all done in a screen 1 inch by 3 inches with 2 colours and very basic visuals.

Again, those were the days.

Perhaps it's time I got rid of all this new fangled technology and went back to self flagellation.

Anyone got any salt for my wounds?

No salt but got some left over vinegar from my lunch. yeah its criminal but it's evolution and well deserved too, there's alot of people saying beginners should learn the analogue way first but why if this is designed to make it easier, be creative! any way +1 for live
