If I have learned anything over the past few weeks here on the forums, it is that there are few written-in-stone answers to anything. There are so many variables - the music you make, the machinery you use, your own experience, your expectations, and the tools you use. Everyone will have a different answer to your question.
I use Sonar 7. I bought it basically because it was a good offer at DV. I had used earlier versions of Cubase and Logic before. I was never really gone on Cubase and preferred Logic (but that was when it was still available for PC

). I am learning to use Sonar but believe in the long term I will switch to either Logic or Pro Tools. In the interim, I am learning how one DAW functions and how to get the best out of that. I hope the skills I learn will be transferrable to other systems.
What's the best software DAW ever? Silly question as I don't think it has been developed yet. If it had...it would be no fun!!
