Default Bass Amp For Recording

Up until now, when recording bass, I have simply been plugging straight into my mixers preamps and recording direct with Bass.

I've been thinking though, that i would like to maybe purchase a decent little Bass amp and mic it up and perhaps blend the miked signal with the direct signal to achieve some different results.

What do you guys think of this approach and also what Bass amps would you suggest for this purpose? Most of you know the sort of style of stuff i record so taking that into account, is there anything you can suggest?

I'm not really in the know about Bass amps, not being a Bass player per se, so your advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers!
