My ISP has always been a bit dodgy but everything is working fine at the moment on everything else (internet gaming, downloads etc). Started last week or so and gradually been getting worse. Pretty much unusable now.

Are you sure there are no plugins? I would expect Java and Shockwave Flash plugins to be there as a minimum. These also happen to be two plugins which can certainly cause bad problems so it is worth keeping them up to date if they are installed.
You can check for any plugins from the Tools menu;
Tools-> Add-ons -> Plugins

I was meaning more extensions than plug ins, but after having a look through i've got a fair few that might be a cause?
I'm running the latest firefox, got the latest shockwave flash and also got:
DivX web player 1.4
Flip4Mac 2.2.1.11
iPhotoPhotocast 7.0
Java Embedding plug in 0.9.7.2
Microsoft office Live Plug in 12.2.0
Quicktime PLug 7.6.4
Realplayer Plugin 0.0.1d1
Viewpoint Media Player (WPN) 1.0
I can't get on enough (without getting really pissed off with it
) to check all of these are the latest plug ins. Going to delete a few non-essential ones and see if it does the trick.
