Default Vista 64 problem with VST plugins

Greeting to all and Happy New Year,

My problem this year is getting a new computer and trying to set it up for recording purposes. So far Vista 64 is giving me nothing but head-aches (It's worse than my wife nagging me for the past three years). After I installed my emu1212m sound card, fired up the drivers (four times in order for it to kick in properly), configured my Patchmix DSP for Sonar 7 (refer to aformentioned head-ache), I was ready to install a whole slew of VST plug-ins. Here's where I'm at now......Vista won't allow 8/10's of my wave files to plug-in properly and when they do the waves are nothing but sterile waste-lands......"shooting blanks"!!! As an operating system Vista has not impressed me at all.....More like frustrated the hell out of me!!
Question? Has anybody out got any solutions to my problem? I've got three days left on my return policy for the computer at future shop. Should I take it back and go elsewhere to get a new computer with Windows XP pro or should I hold on to the computer and get someone to re-image my computer with windows XP pro? OR even better.....can anybody offer any suggestions to get my VST wave plug-ins to work on Vista 64?

Long winded I know. Forgive me.
